Health Savings Accounts and Dentistry

Health savings accounts are in a simple term, confusing. Many people have a HSA and are underutilizing it by not taking advantage of the many things you did not even know you could use it for. Being more dental focused we wanted to outline for you some of the things you can use your HSA for in the dental office.

·        Canker and Cold Sore treatments (over-the-counter)-This is covered through a prescription from your Dr.

·        Co-Insurance for your dental (ie hygiene visits, fillings, crowns)

·        Copayment for dental

·        Cosmetic procedures or surgery for birth defects, accidents, and/or disease with a letter from your dentist

·        Deductible for dental plan

·        Dental care (for non-cosmetic purposes, including sealants)

·        Dental reconstruction (including implants)

·        Dental veneers- with a letter from your dentist

·        Dental, oral, and teeth pain products (over-the-counter)

·        Dentures, Bridges, etc..

·        Occlusal guards to prevent teeth grinding (also known as night guards)

·        Office visits

·        Operations (vision and dental only)

·        Orthodontia (braces and retainers)

·        Smoking Cessation (programs/counseling)

·        Smoking Cessation drugs (prescription)

·        Smoking Cessation gum or patches (over-the-counter)

·        Student health fees for dental services (billed for actual services received)

·        Medicated Toothpaste (difference in cost only of medicated toothpaste over standard toothpaste)

·        X-ray fees (dental)

These are some of the benefits you may be missing out on with having your HSA. Things such as an occlusal guard are typically not covered by insurance but prevent future wear on the teeth. Make sure to take full advantage of your benefits if you have them.
